I’m alive
I AM alive and I HAVE been running (and running WELL at that, actually)! However, I moved to my new house in the state park in Maryland and we still don’t have internet, so getting to the library to log my runs has been kind of a hassle. Plus I was in the mountains of western Maryland for all of last week learning how to fight wildfires (and doing some mountain runs, of course!) and had no connection to the outside world. So I have a lot of catching up to do and I’ll get started as soon as I can. I haven’t logged the monster mileage I had been or would like to be because the achilles is still a little angry. I can run on it but not as much as I’d like or it gets sore. I’m gonna train as much as I can and do the 50k in DC two weeks from today and then, depending on how everything goes, might take up to 3 weeks off in November to get healthy again before starting the building and training for Boston next year. Hope everyone else has been running well!

The Wiss w/ Jess
Today I went down to the Wiss (short for Wissahickon Drive) with Jess and some of her teammates and her awesome coach, Dan. They were doing their long run for the week and I tagged along with her which helped to hold me back a little and push her a little; win-win-win. She was only allowed to run for 1:40 which meant about 12 miles. Not quite what I’d consider a long run but it WAS the longest I’ve run in longer than I care to think about. I felt GREAT. My legs are really fresh from not logging very many miles, and the faster running I’ve been doing has dropped perceived easy pace comfortably under 8:00. I ran the first 11ish miles with her and then for the last ~1.5 miles, as we were going uphill back towards the trail head, I took off a little and it felt wonderful. Then I jogged back to meet up with her, and did two ~25 second pick ups which were hella fun. Finished with a nice hard effort up a fairly gnarly quarter mile hill, pushing all the way to the end.
My achilles is a little sore, I’ve been elevating and resting the rest of the day. From here on out, the current plan is one on, one off and then just getting through the 50k in reasonably good shape. I have the fitness to run 8:00s for hours and if I can just do that in two weeks I’ll be pleased.
Workout:

Down time
I’m still alive. I just haven’t logged a workout in a week. Because I haven’t DONE a workout in a week. At least, I haven’t RUN in a week. I kinda knew all along this is what I was gonna end up doing, but I really wanted to do that time trial 5,000 before I took any considerable time off, even if that made things a bit worse. This achilles aggravation still is not as bad as it was earlier, I believe, but I’m still not taking any chances. And I have time on my side so I can afford to take some time off now (better than later in October, or heaven forfend November!). The plan is to take AT LEAST 10 full days (this will be day 10) and if need be, not run again until the Baltimore Marathon relay next Saturday (and if need be, take off another week after that). The goal is to be healthy and running again by mid-October so I can do a mini-build to get through this 50k November 1st.
